Matching crops to your soil type

Soil type changes how water and roots behave.

  • Sandy — drains fast; cassava, groundnuts, cowpeas often cope better
  • Clay / black cotton — holds water; drainage helps; sorghum and some vegetables may suit
  • Loam — flexible; maize, beans and many vegetables do well with good management
  • Volcanic / red soils — often fertile; tea, coffee, maize and potatoes in the right altitudes

Altitude and rainfall still matter. Use Farm insights as a starting point, then confirm with local experience.
